We had been eating a “healthy” diet for years, you know, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats etc. There was only one problem: It wasn’t working. I was 50 pounds overweight, exhausted all the time and my face was breaking out constantly. One morning my husband, who is a type II diabetic, had been complaining of just not feeling right. We tested his blood sugar and I almost fell over. His fasting blood sugar was 260. (Normal is 60-110) This was on his medication too. That was it for me. Something needed to change now and the time for excuses was over.
I had played around with paleo recipes at home before and even had some cookbooks, but my husband wasn’t on board with the idea so I always reverted back to the way we had been eating. But the idea behind the lifestyle of paleo had always rung true for me: fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, seafood, healthy fats and nuts. Real food. After John’s blood sugar reading the first thing I did was grab this book off of my shelf.
If you don’t have Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo, you need it now. Not only does it do a fantastic job of explaining why you should be eating paleo, it also includes tons of meal plans and fabulous recipes. Dog eared and stained, this is my Paleo Bible. I have other cookbooks that I love, but this is always my go-to and I know it will be yours as well.
As of this post we have been eating this way for three weeks. John’s blood sugar has dropped 120 points. I’m only going to weigh myself once a month so I’ll let you know that number on September 14th. Weight aside, I feel really good eating this way.
